Commercial WordPress websites are widely popular for a reason: they offer a relatively simple solution for a quick online business launch with deep customization capabilities. AI services estimate the global share of websites built on this CMS at around 40%, surpassing the total number of sites on Wix, Shopify, and similar platforms.
Despite its popularity and free platform, WordPress cannot fully compete with enterprise-level CMS solutions due to several well-known factors:
-
High dependency on third-party plugin terms, most of which are only conditionally free;
-
Lower security level;
-
Insufficient performance in high-load projects.
Therefore, commercial WordPress sites are great for small online stores with a relatively stable product line and without layered integrations with other systems. This is precisely the case and customization scenario we are examining this time in the "Novosynyavsʹkyy Gravel Factory LTD" project.
Unique Calculator
The first step in deepening project development (after deploying and launching the site itself) was the custom development of a specialized calculator. Our client's primary product is crushed stone. Although the material (natural granite) is uniform, each product type has its own characteristics, the most important being the fraction—i.e., the size of the crushed stone.
According to official construction standards, different types of roads have strict requirements regarding material usage and quantities. For instance, preparing a sub-base layer for a residential driveway with a 5-ton load limit (passenger cars) requires laying three layers of crushed stone in different fractions.
Since the standards are predefined, it became possible to create a tool that accurately calculates the required amount of materials with minimal input from the buyer. They only need to:
-
Select a site layout template;
-
Specify width, length, or directly enter the total area.
In a single click, the tool calculates the result and displays a table with quantities and costs. Values can also be adjusted dynamically. The final version can be downloaded as a print-optimized PDF file, allowing the user to place the order immediately.
But over time, this proved to be not enough…
Improved Order Form
By default, the product card in the catalog initially contained an "Order" button that led the buyer to a general order form managed manually by a sales manager. As order volumes grew, this created an unprecedented load on staff and required automation. Avivi's developers were tasked with creating a highly convenient and functional custom form.
The updated form resulted from integrating the previously built calculator: now all necessary calculations can be made and adjusted directly within the order form.
The form still opens as a modal window when clicking the "Order" button on any product card and pre-populates with its name. This is an important detail, as buyers can switch the product to any other via a dropdown list without closing the modal window. However, this feature becomes truly useful when a customer decides to add another product item.
The next innovation is units of measurement. In addition to length, width, and area familiar from the calculator, "Tons" and "Volume" were added. As a result, buyers can now use whatever information they have at hand without prior complex unit conversions—the calculator handles everything.
With one click, users can add a compaction layer, which automatically calculates an additional 30% of the total volume.
Crushed stone delivery always involves complex logistics and costs. For self-pickup, these fall on the buyer. But seller-provided transport is also an option: the customer simply needs to specify the construction site location and select an available truck capacity (10, 20, or 30 tons). Route calculation is handled via the Google Maps API, allowing immediate understanding of the required trips and, most importantly, the delivery cost.
Now, all that remains is to fill in the contact details, and the order is routed directly to the sales manager.
If the buyer provides an email address in the contact fields (which is deliberately optional), the generated PDF document is automatically sent there. Otherwise, it can be downloaded directly from the order confirmation window.
Notably, the company's sales manager also receives an email, but instead of a branded table like the buyer's, it comes as an XLSX spreadsheet. This format is much easier to work with, and the data can be seamlessly imported into a CRM or ERP software.
Summary
Regardless of your commercial site's CMS, it must align closely with business needs and ensure smooth process execution. A WordPress website can become an effective and reliable solution when properly configured with custom functionality. Thanks to Avivi's developers, our client gained powerful functionality that drives business growth and enhances their brand image among crushed stone buyers.
